As the sun began to set, the members left the golden sand and warm salty breeze of Bagan Lalang reluctantly for dinner in the official precinct of Putrajaya, not realising that actually the action of the night was just about to begin. Bagan Lalang was just a yummy entrée that wetted the appetites of the participants, not knowing what else was in store for them.

The convoy reached Putrajaya just about when the lights were switched on and what a sight! The streets were lit gaily with festive lights to usher in the New Year and the convoy could not but slow down to marvel at them. Dazzled by the enchanting bright lights, the convoy almost went to visit the Prime Minister’s Office but sadly turned back when they realised that he was at home resting with his loving family.

The Putrajaya Lake Club awaited the hungry and thirsty pack and everyone tumbled inside to start the fundraising dinner amidst the beautiful lakeside view and the brightly lit mosque in the background. Unlike other dinners, there were no white ties and tuxedos but the spontaneity and generosity of the members shone through. After a hearty dinner of Asian and Western delights (the food was quite good actually!), everyone settled down for a meaningful discussion about the impact of the Terrible Tsunami and how MX5MY could assist them best. From the youngest to the oldest, views were sought and quickly a resolution proposed was adopted with nodding heads.

The members’ fundraising efforts continued with a small auction of an assortment of bits and pieces contributed by each member. Some items were exotic limited edition models MX5s, whilst one lady member sadly parted with her beloved red cuddly toy doggie for this meaningful cause. The members took turns to help explain and demonstrate each item for auction. This was of great excitement for a particular “young” man (identity withheld to protect the innocent) holding up an illustrative sports calendar and some stickers.

Two members took turns to play auctioneer. Joshua, who reigned as the champion of Jewish Auctioneers Association, soon got everyone frantically digging even deeper into their wallets and slapping cash on the table. Shrieks of laughter pieced the tension from the keen bidding. Winners were congratulated with thundering applause every time the official Nokia time keeper went off. In no time, the items disappeared into the clutches of the new owners and the little coffee tin serving as the “tabung” for the Tsunami Fund was stuffed with bank notes!

The members bid each other adieus and got into their cars to head home for their much needed rest. Most had even forgotten that Monday was another working day! As the convoy of MX5 tail-lights disappeared into the darkness, each member heaved a sigh of sadness at the end of a memorable night out with the MX5 Club of Malaysia, a club that cares.

MX5MY would like to thank Harry Bright, a local professional auto-detailing company, for sponsoring 2 goodie bags of Meguiar's car care products and detailing vouchers for the fundraising occasion.
