Another weekend arrives and it was turn for yet another group of car
clubbers to go on a (short) road trip out of KL. This time it was the
newly formed MX5 Club, the club that celebrates Mazda’s trend-setting
roadster. After a hearty Kelantanese breakfast at Restoran Che Nah, no less than 17 cars - in mk1 form of course - made their way to Bukit Tinggi. The long and hilly Karak highway and short snaky turns of Bukit Tinggi became a spot-on combination for members to explore the talents of the tiny Japanese roadster. But once arrived at Colmar - a replica French themed resort - members are rewarded with a marvellous sight of medieval French architecture and the opportunity to take the mandatory snapshots. Assembling their multicoloured cars on the parc ferme, the cars became a sideshow for tourists who stopped to admire the glorious splendour of open-top motoring. All thanks to members Benny and Ghaffur, who expertly supervised the formation. After the photo session and some sightseeing, club members moved to Goh Tong Jaya to use the famous Ulu Yam back road on the way back to KL. For those who have not been here, Ulu Yam is a long downhill stretch of tarmac, treacherous for the uninitiated but immensely rewarding for the pro-steerer. So here is where 17 broke into sections of three and more, all relishing the “zoom-zoom” moment. There’s nothing quite like feeling the momentum of the decline and big rush of wind in your face (open top). Thankfully everyone made it out unscathed (but not for one The even weight distribution and the well-sorted suspension of the MX5 makes it a boon to drive quickly on the way up to Bukit Tinggi but a tad too much for Jeff the Sweeper, whose highly modified MX5 overheated in the succession of hard acceleration and braking, forcing him to stop by the roadside many times. unfortunate Satria GTi member who drove his car into a drain) to live another day. Mazda (Encik Shahidin of C&C Bintang) supported the club’s excursion by handing out caps and an MPS MX5 poster to members. |
